We got a much-needed two weeks off of school for a summer break. Husband and I flew to California to see his family. The trip is so wonderful, the entire family stayed at their family house and it’s so much fun to just hang out with them (grandma, aunt, uncle, cousins, sister-in-law, brother-in-law, the in-laws, and the kiddos).
Not to mention with an East Coast inner clock I can “sleep in” and still be up early with a cup of coffee before the first little kid sighting. And my lovely sister-in-law has been chef for all meals that require cooking – I help by chopping and stirring.
I did mix together a Fourth of July inspired sangria. It was red strawberries, blue berries, and white pineapple. Mixed together in white wine, simple sugar, triple sec, and vodka – happy fourth!
We have played with water guns, splashed in the kid pool, grilled out, flew kites, played down at the lake and enjoyed some old fashion fireworks and s’mores. If you ask me, it’s the real definition of a family holiday and I’m so grateful to be a part of it.
To prepare for the trip and to win Aunt points – I made homemade marshmallows, red (peppermint), white (vanilla), and blue (regular with blue sprinkles) and a side special of Reese’s peanut butter stuffed.
The Reese’s stuffed turned out better than expected. To prevent the chocolate from melting as I added it to hot sugar I chopped up the Reese’s cups and then froze them first (After almost 6 months of culinary school, I was confident this would work)
Last night we lit the gas fire (we didn’t add wood because of the wild fires near by) and roasted some marshmallows and made s’mores. It was a family affair and everyone had a great time – Aunt Nicole for the win!
Summer break and our vacation in CA has been amazing so far!
